Four days in Istanbul: enough to love it, not enough to see everything
Istanbul rewards curiosity but punishes frantic schedules. In four days, you can enjoy the historic peninsula, take to the Bosphorus and get a sense of neighborhoods beyond the postcard sights. The trick is to group places by geography and leave time for ferries, queues, coffee and the moments you did not plan.
Choose a hotel with convenient transport rather than judging it only by a rooftop photo. Istanbul is large; an apparently small distance can become a long taxi journey in traffic. Trams, metro lines and ferries are often a better backbone for a first visit.
Day 1: Sultanahmet without the checklist panic
Begin in the historic peninsula. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome area and the Basilica Cistern are close enough to form a logical walking day, but entry rules and worship times vary. Prioritize the two sights you most care about, then use the rest of the day flexibly. Dress respectfully for mosques and allow extra time for security lines.
If you love museums, leave Topkapı Palace for a substantial separate visit rather than trying to squeeze every room into the end of a crowded afternoon. An exhausted traveler sees less, even with more tickets.
Day 2: Palaces, markets and a Bosphorus perspective
Spend part of the day at Topkapı Palace or another museum that interests you, then walk toward the Spice Bazaar or nearby streets. Look for a short Bosphorus sailing with a schedule that suits you; being on the water changes your sense of the city. A dinner cruise can be fun if you want music and a show, but a quieter daytime ferry may be better if scenery is your priority.
Ask before paying whether your chosen cruise includes food, drinks, transfers and live entertainment. Similar names do not guarantee the same experience.
Day 3: Cross to the Asian side
Take a public ferry to Kadıköy or another neighborhood that appeals to you. Enjoy local cafés, markets and a walk by the water. This day works precisely because it is less monument-heavy. Do not worry if you spend an hour browsing a bookstore or watching boats: that is part of a city holiday.
Day 4: Choose your own Istanbul
For art and atmosphere, consider BeyoÄŸlu, Galata and contemporary galleries. For grand interiors, explore a palace or museum you skipped earlier. If you want a calmer finish, browse neighborhood streets and buy small gifts without crossing the city again. Leave a generous airport transfer window if this is departure day.
The practical questions
Where should first-timers stay? Sultanahmet suits people prioritizing early historic-sight visits. Areas with strong tram/metro links can offer more dining and evening flexibility. Think about noise and the steps between your hotel and transit.
Should I book a guided tour? It helps when you want historical explanation and a coordinated route. Independent days offer more freedom for meals, shops and spontaneous stops; a mix can work well.
What if it rains? Swap an outdoor Bosphorus or long walk for museums, covered markets and cafés. Keep one flexible day rather than assigning every ticket to a fixed hour.
