Eight days in Greece: donโ€™t lose three of them to ferries

Athens, Santorini and Mykonos fit together naturally on a map, but each change of island takes more than the published sailing time. You must get to the port, check in, carry luggage, travel, disembark and reach the next hotel. Build those transitions into the itinerary and eight days can feel rewarding instead of hectic.

The route below is a planning model, not a guaranteed transport sequence. Actual ferries and flights depend on your travel dates, weather and seasonal service.

Days 1โ€“2: Athens deserves its own time

Settle in on arrival and explore your neighborhood. On your main sightseeing day, visit the Acropolis and consider the museum if ancient history interests you. Start early in warmer months, bring water and wear shoes for polished stone surfaces. Later, enjoy dinner rather than racing to every museum in the city.

If your arrival is late, do not count that evening as a full first day. Adding one Athens night may be more sensible than reducing it to a layover.

Days 3โ€“5: Santorini without constant checking of the clock

Travel to Santorini on a confirmed connection and give yourself the afternoon to settle in. Use one full day for caldera villages and views, another for a boat excursion, a beach or simply exploring at your own pace. Santoriniโ€™s appeal is the setting, and the setting is easier to enjoy when youโ€™re not in a queue for the next transfer.

Some hotels sit down steep steps inaccessible by vehicle. Ask about luggage assistance and access before paying for a dreamy cliffside room.

Days 6โ€“7: Mykonos, then prepare to leave

Move to Mykonos and enjoy a beach afternoon, the old-town lanes or the nightlife according to your interests. One full day can be fun, but it is a brief introduction. Ask whether your departure flight operates from Mykonos or requires a return to Athens; that choice influences the final overnight stop.

Day 8: Departure, not an extra island day

Do not plan an ambitious excursion before an international flight. Allow a sensible buffer for island weather and transport changes, particularly if you book separate tickets.

Questions to ask before committing

Ferry or flight? Compare door-to-door time, baggage handling, season, port or airport location and cancellation policies.

Can I swap Mykonos for Naxos? Yes, if a calmer beach-and-village experience appeals more. Check the onward connections before deciding.

Is eight days too short? It works for travelers comfortable with a few travel days. If you hate changing hotels, keep Athens plus one island and enjoy the extra time.
